Eco Factor: 24-hour public library to use a rooftop solar plant for power.

Taiwan will soon get its first unmanned 24-hour public library, construction on which has begun. The library will generate power for itself using an array of rooftop photovoltaic panels. The library has been donated to the Taipei City Government by Cheng Fu-tien, late chairman of Motech Industries Inc.

The architects involved in the project have stated that while in a conventional building, one square meter of space consumes about 220KWh of electricity per year, solar-equipped buildings consume a mere 70KWh, reducing energy use by as much as 66%. The library is scheduled to be completed by June 2010.
