Eco Factor: Skyscrapers designed from recycled materials would house animals.
In an era where urban population is choosing to live in multi-story buildings, some architects don’t want animals to continue living a jungle life too. Garnett Netherwood Architects have recently won the first Holbeck Urban Village Wildlife Competition with an ambitious project that aims to bring animals closer to humanity by making them live in skyscrapers.
The grand plan is to create a green tower from recycled materials collected from demolished buildings, which can house animals of different species at different levels. Known as the “Urban Takeback”, the design will cater to the wildlife of Holbeck Urban Village. The plan looks good, but it would be nice to consider the kind of impact such a structure would have if animals are forced to live in it. Would it be much different than animals being caged in zoos or would it be an open skyscraper where animals would be allowed to leave the premises and come back when it’s dark.
Urbanizing humans and making them live in hi-tech buildings is great because we can cook food for ourselves and make our lives comfortable with the aid of the latest in technology, Animals on the other hand are made for the jungle and chances are really bleak that such a setting for animals would prove to be beneficial.
