Eco Factor: Sustainable skin defines space and harvests rainwater.
FTL Design Engineering Studio have developed the new Rosa Parks Transit Center which will include a passenger terminal and a roof canopy to offer outdoor waiting areas and a drop off area to play a pivotal role in providing alternative means of public transport to the greater Detroit area.
The project’s requirements were simple and included a permanent roof structure that can withstand the harshness of climate and is easier to maintain and can be built in a tight budget. The end result was an elegant canopy that creates an actual visual space and is kept illuminated by natural light. The membranes of the roof hover 50ft above ground, which in some areas is brought to the ground to act as a giant rainwater collector.
