Eco Factor: Plan to refurbish Paineiras Hotel sustainably.

Built in 1884 by Pedro II, Emperor of Portugal, as a luxurious rest stop for wealthy travelers on their way to the Corcovado statue, the Paineiras Hotel in Rio has fallen into disrepair and was abandoned about three decades ago. Officials in Rio are now trying to bring lost glory back to the hotel, by transforming it into an ecofriendly hotel.

The old hotel will be torn down to make space for a new complex that will consist of a tourism center, a national park, an ecofriendly hotel and a convention center. The tourism center will further include an indoor public place, exhibition halls, lockers, shops, a café, changing rooms and a train station that will help visitors reach the monument.

The sustainable development will include a green roof and efforts will be put in to minimize construction waste. On the western façade a large wall will be built to protect the hotel from solar heat gain.
