Eco Factor: Mixed-use pavilion designed to harvest solar energy for power.

Designed by architect Paul de Ruiter, the Autarc is a sustainable mixed-use pavilion designed to provide space for offices or exhibitions with minimum impact on the environment. The BREEAM Outstanding-certified structure carries a fuel cell to serve as a mini-CHP system.

The power generated by the fuel cell is supplemented by photovoltaic panels that are integrated into the flat roof of the pavilion. The pavilion also carries a small wind turbine, and collectively all these systems can generate more power than what the pavilion actually consumes.

The Autarc also has a small-scale hydrogen production and storage unit, which provides all the juice that is needed by the onboard fuel cell system. The pavilion is constructed from lightweight materials and large glass surfaces that allow natural light to filter through.

The entrance features a mesh-like second skin that is equipped with LED lights to serve as a display. The Autarc is designed as a remedy against the causes and consequences of climate change.
