Eco Factor: Wind-powered facility to serve as the National Children’s Museum in Maryland.

After being homeless for over five years, the National Children’s Museum in Maryland will soon get a new facility designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. The new building will be built just outside the nation’s capital and will inspire children to care about the world and the environment in every possible way.

Since the mission of the museum is to educate children on the need to conserve the environment and care about natural resources, the building had to have green elements integrated into its design. Once completed, the 150,000-sq-ft four-story building will be LEED-certified and will feature a wind turbine tower that will generate electricity for the facility.

Apart from the use of wind energy, the building will also feature a wall of living plants, a green rood and sun louvers to admit or block natural light according to requirement. This new museum building is slated to open in 2013.
