Eco Factor: Solar and wind energy generating structure for Copenhagen’s waterfront.
Copenhagen seems to be the dream destination for all EcoFriends. After the “Sundial” and the “Sky Village,” Copenhagen will soon have another green structure to beautify its waterfront. US-based Steven Holl Architects’ have won the International Design Competition for “Project LM” with their solar energy generating towers and a wind energy generating connecting bridge to be built in the city. The stunning structure was unanimously voted first by the jury.
The structure carries two eye-catching towers that incorporate glass curtain walls that are covered by photovoltaic screens. These photovoltaic screens not only provide electricity, but their light reflecting properties provide natural light without heating the towers.
The two towers will be built on either side of the waterfront, which will then be connected to each other with a 65 meter high public walkway, which will be studded with enough wind turbines to provide electricity for all open spaces of the towers. To add to the sustainability of the towers, the structure will also feature seawater heating and cooling systems and radiant floor heating. The top floors of these towers will also have operable windows that would allow the cool evening breeze to enter the floors further cutting down the required electricity.
The Dark Side:
Seawater heating and cooling, photovoltaic windows, wind turbines, radiant floors, natural light and ventilation – does anyone think there can be anything more in it?
