Eco Factor: Self-sufficient pavilion harvests solar energy.

BIOS Architects are proposing to build a self-sufficient pavilion inspired by the self organization and symbiotic behavior of coral. Coral is known to exist in a widely varied form and behavior, however most corals share the same basic characteristics. The ColoniaTechne pavilion for 2010 San Jose Biennial by BIOS Architects merges complex biological systems with the collaborative distributed networks found in the electronic culture.

The pavilion will take form on Diridon Green and will provide a waiting area for commuters and a point of interest with interactive light and sound play. The location of the pavilion will draw people from Diridon station toward downtown and the other biennale exhibits, as the branching shape frames views of the downtown axis and convention center.

The pavilion will feature a small raised stage where a DJ can play or announcements can be made. The architecture will be made from a cellular rib structure, CNC milled from sheet material. In selected cells controlling systems will be installed that will act as an electronic brain of the entire structure. Dubbed “Polyp”, these agents will be equipped with a solar panel, battery, microcontroller, speaker, tri-color LED and a microphone.

These brains will be self-sufficient in terms of power and their location will be based on solar orientation. These Polyps will work collectively and their combined activity will create a unique light and sound show for the commuters.
