Eco Factor: ODA showcases park design for 2012 London Olympics.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has showcased plans for a mini Kew Gardens to be built on the 100 hectares of land between the Olympic stadium and the aquatics center. The scheme has been designed by LDA Design Hargreaves Associates and has been inspired by Victorian and post-war festival gardens. The gardens will contain lawns, riverbanks and several public places that should give the place its required festival atmosphere.

The southern part of the park will have markets, events, cafes and bars. The northern end will be kept quiet and a habitat for animal species will be built there. While the southern end is aimed toward fun lovers, the northern end is for those who don’t like that much chaos.

The gardens would stretch 800 meters, and will include more than 250 species of plants, trees and herbs gathered from four climatic zones around the world. The parks are expected to be a spectacular backdrop for the Games and the heart of the new community.

The Dark Side:

Constructing such parks and gathering plants and herbs from all over the world would not be as eco-affair, just like the park itself. The designers here would have to make sure that ecofriendly construction technique are followed, else the park could become a symbol of criticism during the Olympics.
