Eco Factor: Zero-emission pedal-powered hovercraft crosses Thames.
A flight group at the University of London has shown that pedal power is not just good enough for a weekend ride down to the grocery shop by crossing the Thames on a pedal-powered hovercraft. As expected, the hovercraft, dubbed Steamboat Willy, was made from the lightest materials available like carbon fiber, glass cloth and Styrofoam, which did ease the ride.
With delicate fibers used in the construction process, the machine isn’t actually fit for a daring sea voyage, but considering the areas of improvement it might not be long before somebody tries to cross the Pacific using a slightly stronger cladding.
