China is fast becoming the most advanced green technology and infrastructure using nation. Despite being so very populous and increasing number of new cities, the country is standing proud owing to the concern shown by its government and community groups all over the world. China’s New Eco-City, Dongtan, feels elated over its inclusion into four slated ‘eco-cities’ to be designed and built in China by ARUP, a British company. It is a new city planned on the island of Chongming, near Shanghai. At the Ecocity World Summit, the first would-be eco-city– Dongtan has become a centre of attraction and debate.

ARUP, in collaboration with Shangai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC) and employing a team of 100 people, wishes to convert the city into a greener one with a positive impact on environment. The city is being designed keeping in view the fact that by the time the Expo 2010 opens in Shanghai, it should be able to accomodate 50,000 people. By 2040, the city is slated to be one-third the size of Manhattan.

It is presumed that the above-mentioned city will be self-reliant and competent of engendering energy from renewable resources through continuing design and arrangement. The city would be capable of raising its food and recycling all waste.

It is a commendable step in direction of a cleaner, greener and safer environment and future.
