Eco Factor: DIY system to measure ambient air quality.
A team of students at Carnegie Mellon University have come up with DIY project that lets you monitor the air quality around your home, while adding a touch of elegance to your backyard at night. The student team has designed a way to create giant glowing balloons that change their color according to the surrounding air quality.
The balloons tri-colored LEDs that react to data gathered by an air quality sensor. The lights turn green, yellow or red based on low, average and high values. The developers state that the project could be improved by adding a transistor to make the balloon illumination brighter and by calibrating the air quality sensors to temperature and humidity.
