Eco Factor: Zero-emission DIY electric vehicle.
The Black Current III is the brainchild of brothers Olly and Sam Young, who have spent the last six years in converting a 1960s Beetle to run on a zero-emission electric drive. The vehicle is now powered by two forklift truck motors and 60 12V batteries.
The electric engine churns about 1200lb ft of torque, a 0-60 time of about three seconds and a terminal velocity at the end of quarter-mile of 114mph. The vehicle officially recorded an 11.24sec quarter mile run at Santa Pod recently, beating a Tesla Roadster by more than 1.5 seconds.
