Detroit Electric: An electrifying comeback that span a century!

It was probably a good couple of months back that we said right here that the Detroit Electric is making a comeback and now after a hiatus of almost a century, it finally is back and this time hopefully it will last much longer than the first time around. Now after good long couple of months after making the initial announcement, Detroit Electric is now officially back and in an active way too.

With conventional fossil fuel becoming a rarer commodity with each passing day and with the world trying to cut down on carbon emissions, electric cars are once again a rave. Of course, technology has changed a lot in the time of a century and Detroit Electric will be hoping that its new found ally will help it in that regard. Detroit Electric is a new joint venture between ZAP and China’s Youngman Automotive Group plans to release a limited number of cars based around the Detroit Electric, an electric car produced by the Anderson Electric Car Co. in the early part of the 20th century.

Anderson produced various models of the Detroit Electric from 1907 to 1939, and had high-rolling customers including Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. It was also featured on a US stamp, and today, TV host Jay Leno has some of the cars in his collection. When the opportunity came up to buy the brand, ZAP and Youngman decided to go for it, said ZAP co-founder and CEO Steve Schneider. The reissued car will be based on a model from around 100 years ago.

The combustion car drove the electric cars out of business a good century back. While the electric car may not quickly and easily put the combustion car in the museum, one hopes that will happen at some point in the future. Detroit Electric might not be back for revenge, but it sure as hell is back like the Phoenix and this time, it will take hell of a lot more to put it out of favor.
