Eco Factor: Self-sustaining building with own power source and water recycling system.
Matthew Fromboluti from the Washington University in St. Louis has conceptualized a self-sustaining building that will can be constructed in a 900-foot deep and 300-acre wide crater left by the former Lavender Pit Mine. The proposed structure, christened “Above Below,” will include living and working areas.
With ample green space for farming and recreation, the sustainable building will feature its own power source, water recycling system and mechanisms such as a solar chimney that will help control the artificial climate. The completely underground facility will be enclosed with a dome roof with only some skylights for climate control being included.
With a light-rail system proposed to connect the building with nearby Bisbee, the development will be virtually invisible to those viewing the site above the ground, as the desert landscape will soon grow and evolve over the top of the building dome.
