Seems like companies these days are pretty excited about going green and adopting environment-friendly measures. Part of the reason is the push from administration, part of it is because they have realized that it saves cash and partly they too are starting to feel responsible (Though which of the three are the main reasons is a question open for debate). But the end result is what we are bothered about and it is something completely desirable.
Colocation provider CyrusOne has just informed us that their West Houston data center has received LEED Silver Certification. This was awarded to them after they wringed in several ‘green features’ during the construction and setting up of the center. These include energy efficiency system that has been put in place, reduced interior lighting needs thanks to use of natural lighting, better natural cooling system in place and greater use of available resources.
What does interest us though is what the West Houston data Center is doing with all the heat that is being generated inside that building due to use of possible hundreds of computer peripherals. Remember that data centers produce plenty of heat that was previously deemed as a waste product of the industry. But Google has taken this heat from their data centers and converted it into thermal power.
System like this needs to be in place across all major data centers across the globe. While we appreciate the guys for the Silver Certification, why not go for gold now, guys? We are second to none!
