Copper Mountain Solar 2 to be constructed by Sempra in El Dorado Valley

Sempra Solar Power Plant

Sempra Generation, based in California, has succeeded in building the biggest photovoltaic power plant in South Nevada and has now invested in a bigger and more ambitious solar power project at the same place with Copper Mountain Solar 2. This new project located in the El Dorado Valley of Boulder city will spread over a large area of 1100 acres, producing a whopping 150MW of solar power.

Christened as Copper Mountain Solar 2 this project would be capable of producing nearly three times as much electricity than its predecessor – Copper Mountain Solar 1 that has just commenced operations last year. The cost of establishing this power plant has not been revealed yet, however, the construction will start by 2012 and it is expected to be complete by 2015. Expected to provide energy to 45 000 homes, this plant would start producing electricity within a year of its construction, i.e., by January 2013. However, due to a 25 year agreement between Sempra and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E), the 150MW of energy would be supplied to California from the new plant.

This new Copper Mountain Solar 2 has placed Boulder City as the highest ranking solar energy producer in the US. Furthermore, due to the topography and climate of the terrain, Boulder City is blessed with a lot of sunshine and plenty of land that make it ideal for solar projects.
