Coke All Set To Go Green

Green is the way to go, and Coca-Cola Company seems to have understood this very well. As part of its plans to generate a “greener” image, it has announced plans for a $60-million project. This also includes the construction of a $44-million plastic-bottle recycle plant.

The plant which is to be spread over 30-acres, is to be built in Spartanburg, S.C. This plant will recycle old plastic bottles into new beverage bottles. This is to be operational in 2008. And when it is fully functional would recycle close to 100 million pounds of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic every year. Thats almost 2 billion soda bottles.

In addition to these Coke also has other programs to help with its new ‘green’ image. It has introduced an array of products called Eco-Fashion, which includes clothing, bags, wallets and jewelry. All these are made partially out of recycled material.

This is a healthy trend, as beverage companies have been responsible for huge amount of pollution, and have been criticized in the past for not taking any responsibility. Perhaps coke’s new venture will be a trend setter.
