Coca Cola and WWF create air cleaning billboard made from recycled materials

Plant billboardI am always pleased when somebody thinks of new innovations that can help clean the environment. More often than not, such an innovation is about making life easier. This is one innovation that is extremely thoughtful. With rampant air pollution posing all kinds of health risks, it is great to read that there are inventions that can allow masses to breathe clean.

Coca-Cola Philippines in collaboration with World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) unveiled the first ever billboard designed to tackle air pollution. The billboard is 60X60-feet and it towers over the city at a perfect hight to make a difference. Fukien tea plants cover most of the billboard’s surface area except for a part in the centre shaped like a Coca-Cola bottle. These plants are able to filter up to 13 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year. The truly amazing part of the structure is that it is made entirely from recyclable materials. Old Coca-Cola bottles were used to act as the support or to serve as pots for the plants, attaching them to the frame. The billboard on the whole can absorb 46,800 pounds of carbon dioxide. This means a drastic decrease in the number of illnesses related to inhaling pollutants. Anthony Gao, a botanist who was part of the revolutionary project, was optimistic about the future applications of this invention.

According to the President of Coca-Cola Philippines, the invention represents a commitment undertaken by the company to change the way they operate in countries. Coca-Cola intends to integrate sustainability into their daily functions and spearhead life-changing decisions in the interests of their consumers. The Coca-Cola Corporation has just increased the value of their brand. With this kind of positive involvement in the environment, many people will support the company if it means that something worthwhile will come out of it – other than a refreshing drink!
