Clark County cools it down with efficient waste management

Waste Management is something we have taught from the beginning of our formal education, as soon as we are able to grasp the meaning of science. But the knowledge is not just for the keep sake. This one is a practical knowledge which needs to be implemented in the daily lives. Waste Management not only ensures a cleaner and disease free community, but is also a key for reduce, recycle and reuse programme.

The waste is something that is no more of a use is engrained in our daily lives s much as we forget that they could actually be put to a good use. However, it is high time to realise that leaving the waste as it is, either from commercial complex or home is not only irresponsible but also unsociable.

Types of Waste

Based on whether the waste can be decomposed or recycled, they are classified into two kinds- disposable and recyclable. Traditionally, a disposable waste is a substance or product which can be safely decomposed without any harm to the environment or those who call it home. These products come with such properties that allow them to decompose without any considerable harm to the surroundings. Recyclable waste is those that can be recycled to be reused by the environment. There are professional waste management companies that specialise in segregating disposable and recyclable waste from one another.

The residential and commercial wastes

The residential wastes presents a slight problem in handling as the private communities object and disapprove of the waste that is kept on site at the private properties or community waste centres for longer periods. This can be solved by employing an efficient waste management company. The pay structure can be fixed and can be incorporated with the yearly maintenance program of the communities.

Now the commercial waste also can be put through efficient waste management system. With the new technology and innovative idea, the waste in form of glass, metal and plastic can be put to good use. Our planet could very soon turn into a potential trash can as the waste is being dumped into empty areas without treated. Waste Management addresses the problem of how to deal with the amount of waste and that too at cheap rates.

Clark County sets up an example

Here is where one needs to lead with an example and Clark County is doing just that. It recycled about half of its waste beginning in 2011, which sparked a huge trend in the whole state. The country clocked a recycling rate of about 50.2 percent, which falls just 0.5 short of the figure reported for Washington. These figures in themselves have risen from their counterparts from last year and crossed the 50 percent mark for the very first time. To put into simpler words, half of the municipal waste has been recycled while the rest ended up in landfills.

For a country which churns out thousands of pounds of waste yeah year, even a rise of 1 percent in recycled waste would mean a lot and create a big difference in the environment. Clark Countyโ€™s recycling rate picked up from 49.10 to reach 50.20 percent in 2010. In the words of Mr Pete DuBois who is the sustainability coordinator- “To crank that rate up, it takes a lot of tons, although it seems rather small, it is a good trend.”

A Good Trend they Say

A good trend indeed as these kinds of figures have been reported all the across the state. Recycling rates have been steadily climbing the charts ever since the Ecology department begun to take track back from 1986. That year, Washington had returned a recycling rate figure of 15.2 percent. It topped the charts 18 years later in 2004, with a 40 percent figure.

Good news waiting in the pipeline is that as the recycling rates have gone up, the waste generation has gone down. The sinking economy has resulted in at least one good thing in the mounds of worse things that have happened across the country.

There are extensive awareness programmes in place to guide the residents to reduce and segregate waste and the results speak volumes of the effort put in by the local authorities.
