Eco Factor: Well-insulated student housing made from old cargo containers.
Students in Le Havre, France will now be welcomed with gorgeous dorm rooms made from shipping containers. The Cité A Docks student housing project completed recently by Cattani Architects consists of 100 eco-friendly apartments that offer privacy, visual transparency and a mesmerizing view. The four-story building made using 24sqm cargo containers that are mounted on a metal grid is a good mix of comfort, style and sustainability.
All 100 studios feature glass walls on either end that not only let ample of daylight in, but also allow students to enjoy beautiful views of the lush green garden sitting inside their cozy homes. Whether it is the ground floor or the upper floors, the units provide the same privacy. Each unit has a bathroom, kitchen and free Wi-Fi. The inner walls with wooden furniture add to the aesthetics.
To ensure maximum heat and sound insulation, the walls of the container adjacent to the outside and those that divide the different units have been coated with fire walls in reinforced concrete 40cm wide, and come within layers of rubber to dampen vibrations. The shipping container building is enhanced further by external extensions that become walkways, patios and balconies.
