Cheaper and greener airplanes in the offing

greener airplanes

We have come a long way indeed ever since the Wright brothers first invented the powered controllable aircraft in 1903.

Thanks to a new EU project, coordinated by the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, we will soon have a computer-aided holistic solution for the early phase of aircraft design.

You must be wondering how this design will help us in any way. Well, if we do get the perfect solution for the aircraft’s control system at an early stage, then this knowledge will help us immensely to reduce the risk of wasted efforts on faulty designs, and thus lower developmental costs and enhance safety.

Arthur Rizzi, professor at the Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering, Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden hopes that by October 2009 with a budget of about €5.1 million, a tailor-made design will be made available for making the best possible decisions regarding aircraft design.

Do you know that airplanes contribute significantly to global warming? Combustion of fossil fuels is one of the main culprits. Global CO2 emissions by civil aircraft-in-flight have been estimated at around 2 percent.

I fervently hope that they do come out with the best possible solution, because I am sure that a better designed airplane will not only lessen the pollution in the environment, but make it safer too by reducing any faults in its designing.
