Just think of producing high-quality diesel from just about any product with carbon in it – be it coal to PVC pipe to nylon, sewer sludge, wood, agricultural waste, plain old trash or even plastics! If this is really possible, it will surely reduce the need for importing oil to any nation.
Researchers of the UC Riverside have unveiled a new process, and will be paying $15 million for a pilot plant that will convert any carbon-based product into a gas and then turn it into high-quality diesel and it is to be built in the next two years.
Though retail would be higher, the production cost of diesel by this process is about $1 a gallon, which is still far cheaper than current prices.
