Mathew David Wagner, a professor at Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture & Design, has come out with an elegant blend of historical architecture merged with the modernity of today. The designer is a strong believer of creating structures that are sustainable and ecofriendly, and therefore the Charleston is thoroughly incorporated with “green” practices.
Architects, these days, are focusing on the need to reduce carbon footprint and create buildings that make use of all things natural, without disrupting the environment that we live in. A lot of materials can be recycled and used in a very aesthetic manner and with proper planning, you can also install solar-energy tapping devices or even windmills for that matter for producing green energy to power your home.
The Charleston is not a single structure but a group of independent structures or pavilions that serve as gathering spaces for various outdoor activities that are actually done indoors. The design has various sustainable elements such as maximization of natural light, harvesting mechanism for storm water, an optimal cross ventilation, surfaces that are high in albedo, and appropriate shading.
The Charleston is truly a great way to be outdoors when you are actually indoors! The sustainable architectural plan is commendable and a great move toward incorporating green practices in all spheres of living.
