Castrol Marine presents safer marine lubricants to protect oceans

Among all the products of the modern day civilization contributing to global degradation, ships hover somewhere around the top of the list, with the massive destruction they cause to the oceans with their regular oil leaks. The considerable amount of over 30 million gallons of oil is leaked from ships during normal operations in ports and harbours every year, not counting accidental leakages, despite stringent legislation.

Castrol Marine, a worldwide supplier of marine lubricants, is believed to have come up with a solution to this burning problem, namely, a range of readily biodegradable marine lubricants which it says will cause much less environmental damage than conventional mineral oils if they find their way into the sea. Castrol Marine is positive that its new range of hydraulic, stern tube, gear oils and greases are much less toxic and more biodegradable than other products. That doesn’t mean, however, the company hurries to confirm, that onw would need to compromise on quality of performance.

Jayaraj and his colleague David Gunaseelan, product manager for BP-Castrol Marine Lubricants, said the new lubricant product range used advanced synthetic base oil technology and fatty acids, and that 30-80% of them were derived from renewable sources.

The one obstacle might be the price, which is estimated to be two and a half times of regular lubricants. However, that’s not much of a price to pay to save Nature, and ourselves.
