Here is the first innovation to manufacture carpet out of soy. It has been produced by an Australian company, Customweave. The company is known to develop a luxury line of rugs and carpets. It describes the texture of the carpet as a combination of cashmere, velvet and alpaca.
The fiber of the carpet comes from the “waste” left after processing soy beans. With China producing about 14 million tonnes of soy beans a year, this has provided with the easily accessible and cheapest raw material for making a carpet. Once the soy meal and oil is extracted, the leftover parts of the plant have traditionally been fed to farm animals or sent to landfill. But, Soy Luxe is an up-market niche product, costing at about $650 a square meter. It is something that may change in the near future.
