Blokart: A ride on wheels powered by the wind!

It is amazing how sometimes you just tumble upon something interesting and it becomes all the more special when it is something that you hold very dear to you heart. It is amazing when you end up creating a whole new sport all by yourself and that is something that would be more and more difficult with each passing day as people are trying every wacky thing that they can. But to combine a sport with a green concept and to make a ride both fun and clean is something unique and special.

Blokart is the brainchild of New Zealand based Paul Beckett, who pretty much invented a whole new sport when he came up with the ridiculously simple yet awesome design for the Blokart and brought it to production. A simple three-wheeled kart, with the front wheel steered via hand control, and a sail attached much like a windsurf or land-yacht. The Blokart wasn’t specifically designed for people with disabilities but it’s become a great new sport for wheelchair users in recent years. The sport has become incredibly popular as it has plenty of takers both because of its amazing joy ride and its clean power generating method.

It’s also reasonably accessible financially, with blokarts available to hire for low prices and the base model available to buy for around US$2500. Proving that blokart is not only great for people in wheelchairs, but is also able to go on slightly more adventurous outing than a day trip to the beach, in 2007 a paraplegic piloted his blokart across the Gobi desert. Nicolas Massatt from France took part in the first Raid Challenge, an 8 day, 2000km race across the Mongolian interior by 10 blokart pilots. If you happen to live in a very snowy place then you can just strap on the slides for fun. Even though it is a sport for now, it could evolve in to a wonderful new way of green commuting.
