The summer festivities in Governor’s island, New York this year will witness the designer group Bittertang’s Burble Bup experience. Having won the 2010 Architectural League Prize, this year’s 2011 City of dreams pavilion will be designed by New York City based designer group Bittertang. Their design includes creating a sensual world of absurdity and delight called Burble Bup in the courtyard of Liggett Hall for the four months long summer happenings in Governor’s Island.

Considering factors of eco-conservation and reusability, the designers have come up with materials like soil beams and sparkling reusable inflatables to design a socially and ecologically-sustainable public meeting space. The soil beams that would exemplify the pavilion will be constructed of soil and bark filled tubing and can be later turned into soil compost and roof made of egg- and doughnut-shaped balloons will be recycled as pool toys around NYC following their use on the Island this summer.

Bittertang, which operates out of Guadalajara and New York City, was formed in 2005 and comprises of the partnership of architectural designers Michael Loverich and Antonio Torres. They believe that the Burble Bup’s magical interiors and earthy feel will privilege interactive pleasure and create the ideal architectural atmosphere for the various art and cultural activities that will take place here. The weaved and stacked soil-filled fabric tubes will provide surfaces for lying, sitting, climbing and playing suffciently to hearten desired social relations with which intention the organizers FIGMENT, The Emerging New York Architects Committee of AIANY and the Structural engineers Association of New York originally came up with the ‘City of Dreams Pavilion’ concept two years back.
