Eco Factor: Sustainable mixed-use development powered by renewable energy.
Paul Raff Studio has unveiled the designs of the Biosphere Sustainable Center, a mixed-use development to be constructed in Gananoque, Canada. The center will reuse an 11,508sqm site near Thousand Islands in Gananoque and generate positive social, environmental and economic activity for the entire region.
The Biosphere Sustainability Center will provide space for exhibitions, conferences, market, artisan studios and offices. The building aims to demonstrate the use of renewable energy technologies to the public. It will also serve as an education resource with a positive long-term impact on planning.
The center features two green roofs with walk-out gardens, a walk-through biowall that cleans and purifies ambient air and sculptural sun shades that reduce solar heat gain and conserves energy. The center’s most striking feature is its atmospheric canopy that harnesses renewable solar energy, collects rainwater and provides shade.
