Bio-diesel boat racing to complete the fastest circumnavigation of the globe

by circumnavigating the globe

This is perhaps the most bold, challenging and expensive way of raising awareness of bio-diesel — by circumnavigating the globe! Pete Bethune started his new $2.4 million renewable fuel-powered speedboat in early July. Heading east from Auckland, his boat-tank is filled up with a fuel made from animal fat.

The amateur sailor’s goal is to complete the fastest circumnavigation of the globe in an environment-friendly motorboat using bio-diesel made with salvaged French fry grease, refined soybean oil and other organic and recycled oils.

From Barbados, the record attempt is due to start in March. The North American tour this fall will both test and publicize the boat – Earthrace – and raise money.
