While most people are either buried or creamed after they die, some could soon be eaten by mushrooms. The option hasn’t been added for comic effect, but bio-artist Jae Rhim Lee is totally serious about it. Lee has taken an alternative take on dealing with dead bodies, which involves training the mushrooms. Not to do pony tricks though as that would be too boring. Lee is actually training mushrooms to consume the dead bodies by putting bodies into the fascinatingly innovative “mushroom death suit”.
These aren’t some super-cool hybrid mushrooms. They’re just regular oyster mushrooms that are somehow capable of breaking down decomposing human tissues. Lee feels that having her mushroom suit feeding on your rotting entrails is a far more environmentally friendly way of dying. As for how long it takes for the mushrooms to completely devour your carcass, Lee doesn’t seem to have any answers. Perhaps she’ll tell us once somebody plans to wear this suit after death.
