BIG and its associates, namely, TNT Nuuk, Ramboll, Nuuk and Arkitekti have succeeded in bagging the contract for designing the new National Gallery of Greenland located in the capital city Nuuk from 6 other Nordic competitors.

The site of the project that spans 3000 square meters would be a steep slope that towers above the most beautiful Greenlandic fjord landscape making the National Gallery an architectural and cultural marvel for the entire country. The gallery will be an amalgamation between the new and the old i.e. historical and modern/contemporary art of Greenland under one roof.

The underlying idea behind the National Gallery is to work towards showcasing the Greenlandic national identity through the most vibrant medium of art and culture by presenting circumpolar art alongside contemporary and historic work or in other words, bringing together world art and Nordic art. The concept for designing the gallery is to arouse excitement and curiosity in the visitor and at the same time give them the comfort of a home.

The main design of the building is perfectly geometrical circle that will be built on the steep slope in close harmony to the scenic landscape of Greenland depicting the symbiotic relationship between man and nature.

The National Gallery will have a sculpture garden on the slope overlooking the city and the natural beauty of the Greenland. The project is planned in a way that it becomes an architectural symbol of Greenlandic pride and historical achievements.

Since the gallery is circular in shape, it will be easier to divide the exhibitions in to various shapes and dimensions and the visitor can view the exhibition and simultaneously enjoy the pleasure of a 180 degree panoramic view of the beautiful sculpture garden and natural fjord landscape. There will also be a waterfront in the new gallery which would form the center of attraction with a greater activity.

The ideal architectural planning and perfect geometrical shape of the New National Gallery will be iconic for the people of Greenland and Nuuk in particular as it would open up a new perspective may it be cultural, political, social, historical or architectural.
