Eco Factor: Zero-emission pedal-powered boat to be used to cross the Atlantic.

In an effort to raise £250,000 for charity, two young Bentley engineers are planning a journey across the Atlantic in December 2011 in a self-designed and built pedal-powered boat dubbed the Torpedalo. The engineers Mark Byass and Mike Sayer will use the boat to traverse the 3000 mile crossing, while also setting a new world record.

The Torpedalo is a state-of-the-art nine-meter long carbon fiber boat that will travel from the Canary Isles to Antigua. The duo will be racing against a fleet of about 25 rowing boats in a challenge called the Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race.

The boat is built using carbon fiber and includes solar panels for electricity generation. The energy generated by the panels will be used to make fresh water by desalinating ocean water and to power handheld electronic devices such as GPS, radar and a satellite phone system.
