Bringing old stuff out of closet, redesigning and tweaking them up to go well with today’s’ trend isn’t a novel act. All of us do that right? And that’s exactly the simplest way to explain the newly unveiled plan for Battersea Power Station in London. This iconic structure is hoping to breathe back to life in the most advanced sustainable development ever to be built in this country. Headed by London-based Real Estate Opportunities Limited (REO), for the first time in 25 years, Battersea Power Station will be used to generate electricity again but from renewable sources rather than coal. Alongside the existing power station there will be a new landmark, high quality building designed by the world-renowned architect Rafael Viňoly, which will be the cleanest and greenest building in London through innovative use of natural ventilation. Also the spectacular 300 metre high Chimney and Eco-Dome will dramatically reduce carbon emissions of the 38 acre £4 billion development.

The power station will also be adapted to produce renewable energy from biofuels, waste and other sources. Parts of the existing building will be used in these new processes – for instance, two old chimneys will be put to use as flues to exhaust water vapor from the new biofuel energy plant.

And its not only easy on environment but also mankind as it will house nearly 7,000 people, create up to 20,000 new jobs, and provide about 8 million square feet (750,000 square meters) of residential, office and retail space. Expected to start in 2012 and be completed by 2020, isn’t it the best paradigm of re-using vacant neighborhood.
