Bacterial enzymes to power real-world devices!

bacterial enzymesUsing enzymes by cell to power real-world devices! Does it mean cars too? Yes. Researchers have developed such a hydrogen fuel cell. Isolated from naturally occurring bacteria, the enzymes are used to power devices. This bacterium has evolved to use hydrogen in their metabolic process.

The enzymes are unique in the way that they are highly selective and tolerant of gases that poison traditional fuel cell catalysts — such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide. The enzymes can be grown, and thus they represent a cheap and renewable alternative to the expensive platinum based catalysts, which is used by others in hydrogen fuel cells.
