Bacteria-Powered Motor to power micro-pumps on semiconductor chips

mini workhorses 9Japanese researchers are up in their arms in the making of surprising and innovative machines. Here is another such creation – a motor that is powered by bacteria! This newly designed motor could be used to power micro-pumps on semiconductor chips, analyzing fluids — such as blood and drug compounds.

Besides being environment-friendly and fuel efficient, the machines being biological hybrids, the working cells in it could divide and multiply to automatically replace worn parts.

Yuichi Hiratsuka, a researcher at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Tokyo talking on future innovations said,

In a far future plan, we would like to make micro-robots driven by biological motors. The micro-robot would move around and do mechanical work in the micrometer world.
