It’s good to hear that more and more environmentally friendly vehicles are being built these days. Perhaps, the one reason for the increase in the number of such vehicles are events like the Shell Eco Marathon, which encourages young people to build energy-efficient vehicles.

This year Shell Eco Marathon is going to be held between May 26 and May 28 at Lausitz, Germany. A total of 220 teams and 3,000 students are taking part in this event and are competing with vehicles that can cover the longest distance in one liter of fuel. A team of 10 students from Aston University are also taking part in the Shell Eco Marathon.

This team has designed a special “Super Eco” car for the event. This car is a unique combination of eco-friendly technologies, because its suspension parts are made of bamboo, whereas hydrogen is used as its fuel. Bamboo adds to the strength and makes the car light and earth-friendly, while hydrogen is the simplest and the lightest fuel that causes no pollution.

This innovative car weighs only 150 kg. The body of the car is made of plywood over which the designers have spread lycra to form the bodywork. The vehicle inherits its wheel from a 125-cc motorcycle. The vehicle is fueled by an electric motor that is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The “super eco” car also features a unique central pivot, which betters the suspension of the car and also enables it to fold in places with small parking spaces.

The whole team is very excited about their new vehicle, and is hoping to cover a distance of around 50km on one liter of fuel. The team informs that they have almost completed building their car and are giving it the finishing touch. Their total expenditure on the car was around £1,500 to £2,000.
