Eco Factor: Chicago-area artists convert recycled refrigerators into stunning pieces of art.

Not even in my wildest dreams could I image a machine that keeps things cold transforming into a hot property. Well, this is exactly what an artist participating in the Fine Art Fridges exhibit has done. “VooDoo” Larry Grobe has converted a 1950s Philco refrigerator into the “VooDoo Retro Rod.” Exhibited at Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, this stunning piece of art gathered a lot of appreciation with its 1928 Ford-style look.

The Fine Art Fridges exhibit asked Chicago-area artist to recycle refrigerators and turn them into sculptures as a promotion for ComEd’s appliance recycling program. Participants in ComEd’s recycling program are paid $25 for every old refrigerator or freezer they have diverted from the landfill. The nine refrigerators that got a creative renewal will be on display Monday through Sept. 15 between Chicago Avenue and Illinois Street.
