Eco Factor: Sustainable mixed-use development aims to reduce energy consumption.
Maxwan Architects have proposed the Albino Alligator mixed-use development to initiate regeneration in Amsterdam. Named according to its shape, the Albino Alligator will go beyond standard mixed-use typologies. The development proposes a mix of programs and environments to allow a wide variety of uses.
The development is comprised of five buildings – a workspace building, a strip of row houses, a residential tower, an office tower and a fitness club. Each of these five buildings has been shaped according to the structural needs of its specific program.
The buildings make generous use of glass among metal and concrete. The choice of the materials is made for practical reasons that include heat shielding, light gain, cost efficiency and low-environmental impact. The building is surrounded by a grainy surface that allows rainwater to slowly soak into the ground, preventing runoff and optimizing biodiversity.
