A floating trash boat to raise awareness on… floating trash!

In protest of the massive amounts of trash being dumped into the Pacific Ocean, Dr. Marcus Eriksen and his team of like minded supporters have put together a boat to sail 2000 miles from the California coast to Honolulu, Hawaii to help raise an awareness for this problem. The catch here is that the entire boat is made from trash! Made from 15,000 recycled bottles, a couple of fishing nets and a Cessna cockpit – this is the first floating pile of trash that’s actually doing any good to the polluted ocean!

It’s been aptly christened JUNK, a play on the word meaning both garbage and a particular type of Chinese ship. The JUNK is not equipped with any motor and sails pollution free upon the sea – a bold move by Dr. Eriksen perhaps but, he claims, a necessary one. They have less than 825 miles to go and their progress can be charted on their blog where you can learn more about the floating island of junk and what you can do to help. Here’s hoping they reach Honolulu in peace and succeed in their noble mission.
