Here is a plan for an energy-efficient new water heater. Being developed at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, it could save consumers in Western North Carolina an estimated $200 a month on energy if all goes to plan!
Cutting down on gas and electric energy needed to produce heat, the water heater dehumidifier prototype takes in household air to heat water then releases dry air. The water heater dehumidifier was originally conceived by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a Tennessee-based research lab. It was then further developed through a partnership between Western Carolina University and A-B Tech. It is funded by the Department of Energy.
