Sommerhaus Piu: Sustainable, prefabricated wooden house is a carefree getaway into nature

Sommerhaus PiuWooden structures always manage to exhibit that naturalistic allure, especially when set in a lush, natural and wholesome surrounding. The Sommerhaus Piu designed as a vacation house by Patrick Frey and Björn Götte of Germany, stands out as a fine testament to naturalism, in part accentuated by adroit design considerations.

Constructed of horizontal wooden strips, the whole conception marks a significant departure from the heavy and intricate construction samples we come across in urban areas. The simplistic rustic bearing of the dwelling comprises of a nigh rectangular spatial form covered with a unique overhanging roofing system. The slightly sloping roofing system in itself adds another facet of an innovative lighting system for the whole structure. This is because the architects have thought of a clerestory system (high windows above eye level or mostly just bellow the roof level) that would allow natural light as well as fresh air to be inducted into the interior space through the charcoal slits perforating the roof edges. Direct solar gain has been mitigated by usage of limited conventional windows at sill level.

In sync with the wholesome, naturalistic setting, the floor plan of this single floored building has also been kept flexible. The expansive glass facade of the sliding doors encompassing the kitchen enhances that sense of visual connection of the interior space with the outer natural environment. Psychologically, this allows the coalescing of two altogether different spatial elements (confined interior space and unobtrusive exterior space) to form a singular entity without any segregation. An accessible terrace and verandah further accentuates the level of natural interaction. So, at the end of the day, we have an uncomplicated, convenient and most importantly low carbon design perfect for those rustic yet picturesque getaways.
