Like all other eco conscious organizations across the world that are trying their level best to save the environment, the FIA has also released some strictly green regulations for the 2014 Formula One. So far, the grand prix racing was never environmentally friendly owing to traditional gasoline consuming cars. But now with the release of these regulations, it is expected that the game will turn into a greener sport. One of them is the mandate that F1 cars will now run entirely on electricity.
One important change which will affect the cars and subsequent racing is replacement of V8 engines with 1.6 liter turbo sixes. The changes are not restricted to the change of engines only. There is much more to it as recently the FIA has made a few modifications to the regulations.
According to Rule 5.19 of the revised technical regulations published recently, the cars will have to switch to electric mode while they run in the pit lane. There should be no fuel supply and no ignition for the engine when racing. The revised guidelines also talk about inclusion of the on- board ignition. This will make external motor starters obsolete.
In order to implement new regulations, drastic changes need to be done in cars. One of them is augmenting the capacity of Energy Recovery Systems to 120 kW. The vehicles may recapture energy from exhaust fumes also. This means that the high pitched whine of the engines will be useless that hold at the pit lane.
