S. Portugal builds world’s largest US$78.5 million solar power plant

Installing the world’s largest solar power plant is on the way – it is all happening in southern Portugal. U.S. energy companies GE Energy and PowerLight Corporation, and Portuguese renewable energy company Catavento have started building it.

The solar power plant will generate electricity of 11-megawatt. One of Europe’s sunniest areas in Serpa, the plant is built about 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast of Lisbon he project comprises 52,000 photovoltaic modules.

The plant is a euro61 million (US$78.5 million) project, which is scheduled to be completed by January 2007. It is being constructed in an area of 60-hectares (150-acres). The area faces south of a hillside and it will still be used as farmland, according to the companies.

With GE Energy Financial Services funding the project with US$75 million, will own the facility. The plant is designed by PowerLight — a leading global provider of solar power system. It will also operate and maintain the plant. The project developed by Catavento, will also be managed by it.
