To emulate the power of the Sun, southern France will be witnessing a multi-billion-dollar experimental nuclear reactor soon! The International Thermo-Nuclear Experimental Reactor — once build — will produce abundant supplies of cheap, clean nuclear power with its best part of producing no radioactive waste.
Mimicking the way the sun produces energy, the ITER reactor will aim to turn seawater into fuel!
Considering this as the biggest international science project so far this century, a seven-member international consortium has agreed to build this fusion power reactor. It took years of talks between France, South Korea, Russia, China, the EU, the US, India and Japan to give birth to the project.
Aiming to use nuclear fusion rather than fission for creating energy, ITER will first build a demonstration plant. The project will be capable of producing electricity for the power grid within 30 years.
