If you are staying at New Zealand, make sure that your home is energy efficient! Or otherwise, be ready to be punished! As part of the government’s strategy, you may soon be forced to get ‘fitness warrants’ for your house.
The government is optimistic that by doing this, it will be able to combat climate change. But, this initiate is already facing criticisms that the policy is getting heavy handed and will eventually hurt the people who can afford it the least!
Next year, the government will set up an energy rating system for homes, which will be voluntary initially. But according to the government spokeswoman on energy efficiency, Jeanette Fitzsimons, it may eventually be mandatory to have a rating during a home’s putting up on the market. The homes would then be checked for their insulation quality, windows, water heating and lighting. It is then they would be rated out of five.
