Marriott International — the US-based hotel chain — seems to be serious about its commitment to environmental stewardship. This is revealed by its recent announcement that it is on track for meeting its greenhouse gas emission-reduction goal by nearly one-fifth. And, it will be doing it over a period of ten years — from 2000 to 2010.
According to estimation by EPA, if the goal is met by the company, its emission reduction would be the equivalent of taking nearly 140,000 cars off the roads! That’s amazing! This leading effort by the industry is part of a comprehensive global campaign towards reducing Marriott’s environmental footprint, saving energy costs.
Talking on the goals, Marriott senior VP Pat Maher said,
Being green is good business. It is important for the environment and saves our hotels money.
It is in January, the chain of hotels claimed to have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 70,000 tons in just one year! As part of the goal the hotel chain has made each guest room more energy-efficient, which resulted in a drop in emissions by about 2 percent.
April this year, 2,800 hotels in nearly 70 countries belonging to the company will be celebrating Environmental Awareness Month. This will help the company promote its eco-friendly practices with a series of projects.
