Promising hydrogen storage material for mobile applications developed

lithium hydride storage 9

With the world burning under the ‘global warming’ effects, researchers are up with arms to fight carbon dioxide emissions, the key greenhouse gas.

As a solution, they have urged to use alternative fuel – biofuels or hydrogen – to run their vehicles, the major car emission source.

And, with the automobile industries banking more and more on hybrid cars, the need to store hydrogen cheaply, increasing its mobility is getting priority.

Need for storing hydrogen for mobile applications went a step further to explore areas like the ‘reversible complex metal hydrides.’

For economic and environmental benefits, an ideal solid hydrogen-storage material (HSM), should obey key hydrogen storage commandments like —

High storage capacity,
Reversibility of the thermal absorption/desorption cycle, and
Low cost.

Thanks to the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire team for coming up with a hydrogen storage material for mobile applications.

Led by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the development is funded by the SUPERGEN (Sustainable Power Generation and Supply).
