Enhanced biofuel production making Orangutans homeless

oang utan

The world is going crazy for Biofuel considering its eco-friendliness and the money that is at stake. We all know that the world of tomorrow will require organic fuels and biofuel is the only product that can be mass produced at a low cost. Unfortunately these efforts to go green are coming at the loss of the most intelligent human cousin – The Orangutan.

The condition is most severe in Borneo which hopes to be the largest supplier of palm oil. Palm oil is high in demand because of its use in Biofuel. The demand is set to rise as more and more countries are planning to shift to biofuel to reduce their carbon footprint. In 2004, a master plan was revealed that would create 40,000 square miles of palm oil plantations. This would require about 70% forest replacements to accommodate palm trees.

Workers will have to kill these apes in order to protect their crops, moreover the replacement of forest will also make them homeless and many might starve to death.

With the world going desperate to develop more and more alternatives to petroleum, the environmental or animal concerns barely register with the government or companies involved. International organizations must have a watchdog committee so that countries don’t try to become the world leaders at the cost of an entire species.
