Blue breaks in and green wears out. Fashion, adds to the artificial arena but the ‘real’ is left discontent. Stonewashing jeans for a broken-in, leaves planet earth in a spot of bother! Who had thought that these soft, worn out, broken-in jeans giving you a cool-in look, find ways and means to overshadow their originality.

How do these worn out jeans get those looks? Maybe the cloth used is such. Na, you guessed it wrong so did I, the important thing is wash. These expensive washes are done by toxins and chemicals that are polluting Mexican towns due to run-off from stonewashing denim. Mexico, hub for denim production, according to the report, toxic run-off caused by distressing denim is poisoning the water and irrigation canals in Tehuacan, a region in Central Mexico where more than 700 clothing manufacturers sell jeans to popular U.S. companies.

Of most concern environmentally are the laundries where the clothes are sent for distressing. There, jeans are sandpapered, marked with mechanical tools and faded with large quantities of potassium permanganate – a bleaching agent once commonly used to trigger illegal abortions. “Jeans were born to be used by workers,” now their cost is touching new heights produced on the backs of exploitation and environmental destruction.
